Outdoor CrossFit: grip and sun

CrossFit outdoors adds two blind spots: a slipping grip and sun on your face all session. How to handle both without the protection running into your eyes.

Summary

Outdoor CrossFit adds two constraints to your session: hands that sweat in the heat and a face exposed to UV for the whole WOD. Two separate answers: keep hands dry for grip, protect the face with a sun mist that doesn't run. The [PERFORMANCE SUNMIST] SPF 30 handles the second.

The problem

A box that moves outdoors in summer, a WOD in the park, an outdoor competition: the setting changes, and so does the effort. Heat makes you sweat sooner — so hands slip earlier on the bar and the kettlebells. And while you keep grinding, your face takes the sun without a break, often at its peak.

The classic reflex is to put on your everyday sunscreen in the morning and forget about it. Two problems: at the first big WOD, it runs into your eyes with the sweat, it stings, and it's partly gone anyway. Sun during effort calls for different thinking than the beach.

The mechanism

On the hands side: heat and intensity fire up the sweat glands in your palms, among the densest in the body. A film of water slips in, friction drops, the grip slides. It's a sweat problem, not damaged skin — so a "dry hands" answer.

On the skin side: UV hits your face continuously through the whole session, and the exposure doesn't pause because you're locked on your clock. Sun protection is only useful if it stays in place despite the sweat. Many everyday creams are built for static use; the moment you sweat heavily, they migrate, load the eyes and lose coverage. Hence the burning-eyes feeling mid-WOD — and protection that's no longer really where you think it is.

Two separate constraints, two tools. And you don't mix the gestures either: sun protection is for the face; grip is for the hands.

In practice

For grip. Keep your hands dry with TIVA's [ULTIMATE DRY GRIP] gel (99.9% natural), built for hands that sweat. Applied with the hands, on dry skin, before the WOD: shake, unlock the applicator, 1 to 2 pumps, rub in until absorbed, let it dry. Zero residue — nothing on shared bars and kettlebells. Reapply if traction drops.

For the sun. TIVA's [PERFORMANCE SUNMIST] is an SPF 30 sun mist (UVA+UVB) built for the face during sport. Applied hands-free: shake, spray 15-20 cm from your face, eyes closed, let it dry for a second. What it brings outdoors:

  • Sweat-resistant and doesn't run into your eyes — no sting.
  • Invisible, no white cast, handy right before a filmed competition.
  • Non-photosensitizing, dermatologically tested.

Reapply every 2 hours and after a big sweat. On a long format or a full competition day, keep the bottle (75 ml) in your bag for a pass between WODs.

A practical order on the day: [PERFORMANCE SUNMIST] on the face during warm-up, then gel on dry hands just before you start. The first protects the skin, the second secures the grip. Two problems, two products — and the gel has nothing to do with UV protection.

Verdict

Outdoors, your session faces sweat AND sun. Treat them separately: anti-sweat gel for dry hands and a reliable grip, [PERFORMANCE SUNMIST] SPF 30 for a protected face without it running into your eyes. Reapply the mist every two hours. Two quick gestures, two blind spots covered.

FAQ

Isn't a normal sunscreen enough for an outdoor WOD?

It protects, but many formulas migrate with sweat, load the eyes and lose coverage during effort. A mist built for sport, that resists sweat and doesn't run, is a better fit for an intense WOD.

Do I need to reapply the sun mist during a competition?

Yes. Like any sun protection, it's reapplied every 2 hours and after heavy sweating. The 75 ml bottle slips into your bag for a pass between events.

Does the grip gel also protect against the sun?

No, they're two different products. The gel keeps hands dry for grip; it has no sun function. UV protection for the face is the sun mist's job.
